CANNES, France--Takeshi Kitano's latest film, "Outrage," a violent tale of a yakuza gang power struggle, was screened in competition for the Palme d'Or prize at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival here Monday.
Kitano, who directed and starred as an aging gang leader, received a five-minute standing ovation from a packed audience after the screening. He was accompanied by producer Masayuki Mori.
"The audience appears to have been completely knocked out. I had thought more than half of the viewers would get up and leave halfway through. But maybe they were too stunned to leave," Kitano joked at a news conference.
"I am proud that my movie was selected for the competition division. Let me stop now before I say more impudent things," he said.
