Super photo: Diamonds not always forever

Diamonds are rare, and even more elusive when trying to spot one from nearly 200 kilometers away.

Toshio Tsuchiko's eyes glittered with delight on Christmas Eve when he captured the image of the sun sparkling as it fell behind Mount Fuji.

Tsuchiko, 62, succeeded in snapping the prized shot of a phenomenon known as "Diamond Fuji" at the public lodge where he works in Hokota, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Hokota is 191 kilometers away from Japan's highest mountain, and is said to mark the spectacle's northernmost observable point.

Droves of photographers trek to near the foot of the peak to try to capture the image, which is viewable either at daybreak or sundown.

Tsuchiko did it the hard way, from an extreme distance. He used a camera with the equivalent of a 400-millimeter lens to shoot from a fourth-floor window of the lodge near Tamada Kaigan beach in Hokota on the evening of Dec. 24.

Hiroshi Tashiro is a high school geography teacher who has gained fame for his research on how far away a person can stand and still identify a vertical landmark, such as Mount Fuji.

He applauded Tsuchiko's photo and said: "This is the northern limit (for observation) from the ground. The photographic skills are impressive and the picture is wonderful."
